### About the Event

St. Augustine is famous for his saying, “The New is in the Old concealed; the Old is in the New revealed.” Augustine’s insight provides the theme of this year’s Virtual Theology Summit, where we will consider what it means for the mystery of Jesus Christ to be already present in the Old Testament.

---

In this virtual event, you will hear a keynote presentation on how the Church Fathers recognized the face of Christ in the Old Testament.

You will then choose between two live breakout sessions taught by members of our faculty, in which you will explore the significance of Christ’s presence in the Old Testament for Christian worship, prayer, and evangelization today. *(The breakouts will be recorded, so you’ll be able to watch both!)*

Come with your questions as we’ll leave time for Q&A.

## Schedule

1:00 p.m.
KEYNOTE LECTURE
*Seeing Christ in the Old Testament*
Dr. Christopher Mooney

![GST - Christopher Mooney - Headshot Circle](https://events.augustine.edu/hs-fs/hubfs/GST%20-%20GRADUATE%20SCHOOL/GST%20-%20Headshots%20-%20Faculty,%20Staff,%20Speakers,%20Students/GST%20-%20Christopher%20Mooney%20-%20Headshot%20Circle.png?width=50&height=50&name=GST%20-%20Christopher%20Mooney%20-%20Headshot%20Circle.png "GST - Christopher Mooney - Headshot Circle")

As Christians, we follow Jesus's claim that he has come “to fulfill” the “Law and the Prophets” (Matt. 5:17), that Moses “wrote about” him (John 5:46), and that he teaches us “what was written in all the Scriptures about Himself” (Luke 24:27). But what does it mean for us then to read the Old Testament as about and fulfilled in Jesus? This presentation looks to the wisdom of the Church Fathers, who show how the parts of Scripture are like the tiles of a mosaic which reveal “the beautiful image of a king,” that is, the face of Christ (St. Irenaeus). In particular, we will see how we can not only recognize figures and types of Christ, but even more ought to recognize one consistent pattern of wisdom and love, which culminates in Christ.

1:45 p.m.
BREAKOUT SESSIONS
(Attendees will choose one of the following)

## *“My Sin Is Ever Before Me” (Psalm 51:3): Christ, Guilt, and Redemption* Dr. John Sehorn

![GST - John Sehorn - Headshot Circle-2](https://events.augustine.edu/hs-fs/hubfs/GST%20-%20GRADUATE%20SCHOOL/GST%20-%20Headshots%20-%20Faculty,%20Staff,%20Speakers,%20Students/GST%20-%20John%20Sehorn%20-%20Headshot%20Circle-2.png?width=50&height=50&name=GST%20-%20John%20Sehorn%20-%20Headshot%20Circle-2.png "GST - John Sehorn - Headshot Circle-2")

In the Gospels, Jesus is accused of being a “friend of tax collectors and sinners” (Matthew 11:19; Luke 7:34). St Paul writes that “God made the one who knew no sin”—his Son—“to be sin” (2 Corinthians 5:21). What can that mean? In this presentation, we examine why the Church, while firmly holding that Jesus himself is entirely without sin (Hebrews 4:15), hears Jesus’s voice in the words of Old Testament sinners. We then consider what light this sheds on Christ’s fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets, our own prayer as Christians, and the Church’s message of hope to a broken world.

## *Making Present the Mysteries of Christ* Dr. Sean Innerst

![Sean Innerst](https://events.augustine.edu/hs-fs/hubfs/GST%20-%20GRADUATE%20SCHOOL/GST%20-%20Headshots%20-%20Faculty,%20Staff,%20Speakers,%20Students/GST%20-%20Sean%20Innerst%20-%20Headshot%20Circle.png?width=50&height=50&name=GST%20-%20Sean%20Innerst%20-%20Headshot%20Circle.png "Sean Innerst")

The ancient practice of mystagogical catechesis on the sacraments taught the newly initiated that Christ’s work of the recapitulation of all things, by which “he procured for us a ‘short cut’ to salvation” (St. Irenaeus),  is continued in the sacramental mysteries. This practice involves the application of the biblical types to a decoding of the sacramental signs so that these new Christians would be well disposed to receive the invisible mysteries conveyed by the visible signs.  This ancient sacramental theology is key to the revival of a reverential appraisal and practice of liturgy and to the formation of “true worshippers \[who\] worship the Father in spirit and truth” (John 4:23). This talk will explain the practice of mystagogical catechesis with a view to being better worshippers and mystagogues.
